Virtual Hankou Project

Welcome to a shared history of Hankou

Virtual Hankou is a research platform on the history of Hankou from the nineteenth century to the present day. It aims at collecting different types of documents: scholarly papers, archival documents, photographs and maps. The aim is also to gather information produced not only by the Chinese administrations, but also by British, German, French, Russian and Japanese authorities who managed settlements in Hankou between 1861 and 1943. The platform brings together not only official documents, but also documents from private sources.  Our objective is to write a shared history through the combined mobilization of these various types of documents: visual and textual, Chinese and foreign. The functionality of the base and the use of ICT and GIS allow a new long-term reading of this urban space and hopefully provides valuable information for the preservation of a "shared heritage".
